George William Nicholls was born in Fordham (Newmarket Q3-1897 3B:508), son of James and Clara Elizabeth NICHOLLS (née PALMER).
1901 census...Aged 3, he was at Chippenham Road, Fordham with his father James NICHOLLS [27] game keeper born Fordham, his mother Clara Elizabeth [24] born Landwade and brother Ernest James [1] born Fordham. 1911 census...Aged 13, a farm labourer, he was still at Chippenham Road, Fordham with his parents and brother Ernest and new siblings, all born in Fordham, sister Annie [9] and brothers Percy [7], Reginald [2] and James [1]. |

He enlisted in Newmarket.
His Army records have not been found so it impossible to be sure where or when he was wounded, but his battalion, the 7th Battalion, suffered very badly in the battle of the Somme which started on 1st July 1916. The 7th Suffolks went into action around Pozières on the 3rd July and suffered over 400 casualties, of which 155 were killed that day.
